How does the internet work?

on in Website technologies

The key to accessing the internet resides on your computer or mobile device; it's called a web browser; Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, to name the most common.   Mobile devices have their own browsers or versions of the computer/laptop browsers.   When you enter a web address (URL) or load a site from a search engine you are merely sending a query to find a specific server and a specific set of instruction on that server. The web browser converts the returned code, primarily HTML that is sent to it from the host server into what you see as the website.

The computer where the website, in code form, actually resides is called the Server.  If your website is hosted on "the Cloud," your server, is able to move among connected computers on that cloud.

Web development languages such as PHP, Java script or Microsoft .NET to name a few, allow applications resident on servers to run on the web.  The choice of development language affects your server set-up or cloud network.

Content Management Systems (CMS's) such as WordPress, Joomla, Drupal; or Open Cart and Magento (for E-commerce) have been developed using "open Source" PHP. Corresponding CMS's (proprietary) are available for Dot Net and Java Script.  Each of the CMS's has its' own strengths and weaknesses but provide customizable building blocks with advanced capabilities and efficiencies.
