Mobile App

When is a mobile app the best option?

Remember your mobile phone and tablet are just computers with a wireless connection; those computers have incredible capabilities.   A "mobile-app” is a computer program, a set of instructions, downloaded and resident on that mobile device.   Rather than needing to access a servers computing capacity, with all the delays communicating back and forth; a preloaded app can store data, perform calculations, access other features or data resident on that mobile device (phone, camera, calendar, contacts, etc.) without needing to communicate with the server.  Imagine the benefits if and when users experience a spotty connection or don’t have access to the internet at all.

We have all heard the success stories of mobile apps; the millions even billions that some apps have sold for.   Some of the low hanging fruit may be gone, but that original idea, that new use, that better "mouse-trap" for the mobile computer is just waiting to be developed.

In the past; most 'Mobile Apps’ have fallen in one of the following categories:

  • Interactive gaming... e.g. Angry Birds
  • Personalized regular app use: e.g. format for keeping a list
  • Complex Web App Calculations: bids, banking or stocks
  • Access to device functionality required: GPS, camera, phone
  • Offline access is required: either content or device features
