Mobile Content; design and navigation across platforms

on in Web Development

Mobile Design

It is no small feat developing a website with visual appeal that functions and flows properly for a desktop computer; that challenge will be multiplied exponentially for a mobile site.

Have you been hesitating on adding that mobile site? Perhaps your current site has some mobile functionality but does it accommodate all the latest mobile devices?  Smartphones and tablets currently range in size from 2.6” to 13”.  A mobile sites must accommodate every size device; it is not just a matter of smaller letters and pictures; developers will need to modify formats, move columns, change navigation, etc. to make that information displayed on a mobile devices useful. Although visitors on mobile devices will see a different view, they want the same things from both mobile and desktop sites.   Does it load quickly? (less than ideal connectivity can be a big mobile issue) and can they understand and efficiently navigate your site.   Mobile devices are smaller and navigate very differently and visitors tend to have even less patience when searching from their mobile devices.

Irrespective of the technology, adapting designs for the differences in screen sizes and navigation requires evaluating:

  • What content makes sense? Less is best!
  • How the shuffling of content as screen grows or shrinks effects comprehension? Scanning versus scrolling
  • How does navigation change across platforms?
  • Understanding user behavioral differences when using; desktop, laptops, tablets or phones
  • Scaling across multiple platforms while maintaining consistency
  • Dealing with desktop features that don’t work on mobile devices
  • How to use images
  • Identifying what your visitors want and how to give that to them first
